The Dr. Who: Earth Story dvd is sure to gratify long-time fans of the series with its package deal of two great story lines starring two great doctors, Peter Davidson and William Hartnell. The two stories, “Awakening” and “Gunfighters” both take the doctor to planet earth, where some of its best-known heroes are encountered and evil war machines are encountered.

In “Awakening”, TARDIS descends upon the English countryside, landing in the quaint village of Little Hodcome in 1984. Unfortunately, there is no time for tea, crumpets and a chat because an alien war machine, the Malus, has been primed for awakening. The terrible agent of destruction has been gathering psychic energy for its return, and it is up to Doctor Tegan (Peter Davison) and Turlough to thwart the attack and save the denizens of the blue and green planet. The story is paced expertly, the chemistry between Tegan and Turlough is great and the Malus is a wickedly perfect adversary. All told, the sotry is an entirely satisfying, highlight-packed adventure sure to please Dr. Who die-hards.

“The Gunfighters” finds the Tardis arriving in the well-known and well-loved locale of Tombstone, smack dab in the middle of the Wild West. The show tips its cap, so to speak, to famous Tombstone legends such as Doc Holliday, still practicing dentistry and feuding with the Clantons. Wyatt Earp makes an appearance as well. The Doctor rubs shoulders with these famous characters after hurting Cyril’s sweets, and resolving to get a dentist’s help. The action takes off from there, sucking the Dr. Who characters into an unfamiliar universe that American viewers know and love. William Hartnell plays the doctor, provoking debate over he and Peter Davison’s respective aptitude for the role. Doc Holliday is portrayed with characteristic, assured puckishness and Wyatt Earp is handled expertly as the righteous peace-keeper of Tombstone.

The dvd is well-worth the purchase for die-hard fans of the series, as well as its newcomers, requiring little knowledge of back story for full enjoyment. Watching both stories back to back provides a perfect opportunity to spur debate amongst fans over Davison and Hartnell. Available online today, the Doctor Who: Earth Story DVD will provide laughs and high-quality entertainment for long time fans and newcomers alike.
