All content management systems are a manual or computerized group of procedures that organize the processing workload for a specific operations environment.

There are four major CMS types. Each is alike in basic processing and management of work flow, but their subtle differences are essential for the types of content they are overseeing. We shall run through their differences briefly.

Component content management systems (or CCMS)

These are usually storing and managing content at the actual level of the components. The content is being reused regularly. You see these systems managing servers, objects, and doing auditing. They also are used in situations where regular reports are constantly maintained, like security based situations.

Web content management systems (or WCM)

These systems are designed to make web publishing to websites and mobile devices simpler. They allow for HTML, file uploading, and the creation of content for submission from whomever uses the system. The system manages all content without users having knowledge of programming language or code editing.

Web group content management systems (or GMS)

These are very similar to the WCM systems. The difference is that these systems manage data for organizations and groups that are maintaining an online presence. There are multiple distributions of task maintenance allowing for simultaneous communications, planning, scheduling and assignment of tasks on a wider scale. The goal is to take online content and organize it easily for group projects internally.

Enterprise content management systems (or EMS)

This kind of system has primarily unstructured content that is used by a commercial organization. This data requires consistent management. The data generally consists of content, records, documentation, and other details that are relative to organization. The system makes sure that the enterprise processes keep within expected parameters of regularity.
