The Best Steam Irons

Some of the best steam irons out there are the Black & Decker Digital Advantage, Panasonic Cordless, and the Rowenta Pro Iron Steam Station. The Black & Decker Digital Advantage model is inexpensive when compared to other models. It features variable steam settings, three-way auto shut off and a beeping indicator to alert people when a desired temperature has been reached. The Panasonic Cordless model sports a transparent, removable water tank. Though it must be set in its base to stay heated, the lighter weight and greater mobility of the iron make up for the small inconvenience. The Rowenta Pro Iron Steam Station has a separate base which contains the water reservoir. The base holds much more water than would be held in the iron itself and doesn't need to be refilled as often. These irons all have one thing in common. They are superior to the irons of the past.

Steam Irons in Use

Before the introduction of steam irons, people had to iron their clothing while it was still damp. It was the only way to eliminate wrinkles in their garments. The Eldec Company was the first to present the steam iron in 1926. The small water tank in the steam iron would heat up, creating a water vapor. By pushing the button on the handle of the iron, the water vapor was released through small holes in the bottom. The steam from the iron smoothed out the wrinkles easily and with little effort. In spite of this, the steam iron didn't start to become popular until the 1940s.

The Basic Features of the Steam Iron

The steam iron has a thermostat that keeps the iron hot. Different temperatures can be selected using the thermostat. The tag on the fabric being ironed usually gives a good idea of what temperature to put the thermostat at for the best results. The automatic shut off mechanism turns the iron off if it is left alone for too long. This safety feature prevents the possibility of burns or fires and saves energy as well. The steam iron also has a built in spray nozzle that draws from the water reservoir inside the iron. Using this feature in combination with the steam, then running the iron over the material should take care of particularly stubborn wrinkles.

Conclusion

Irons may seem old-fashioned when there are dry cleaners and many clothing manufacturers that claim to use "wrinkle free" materials in their clothing. Places that dry clean clothing use many chemicals which may affect some people who have allergies. The high cost of dry cleaning is another factor to take into consideration. Using a steam iron not only makes good sense, it pays for itself in the long run. A quality steam iron can last fifty years or longer with proper maintenance.
